Legislation which would give councils the power to introduce a visitor levy to raise funding for local tourism facilities and services has passed its first vote at Holyrood.

Holyrood has launched a public consultation on the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill, proposed legislation that would allow local authorities to impose an additional charge on overnight accommodations, such as hotels and bed & breakfasts.

The Scottish Government has published the Visitor Levy (Scotland) Bill, potentially enabling councils to introduce a tourist tax on overnight stays.
