A US business magnate has ploughed £750,000 into Aberdeen Football Club after enjoying golf trips to Aberdeenshire and making his first visit to Pittodrie.

Businessman Tom Crotty, who was also a keen footballer in his youth, has spoken of his excitement at getting involved with the Dons, and of his previous association with club legend Bobby Clark when he was skipper of Notre Dame Men’s college soccer team in Indiana and Clark was head coach.

Mr Crotty, who has been in the venture capital industry for 30 years, has also worked in business alongside major Aberdeen FC shareholder Dave Cormack for 10 years.

His main commercial interests have focused on communications and software, leading investments in dozens of early stage companies, but he has also been involved in getting charity, Grassroots Soccer, off the ground with Mr Clark’s son Tommy.

The organisation is focused on adolescent health and uses football to teach children life skills.

Speaking from Boston, Mr Crotty total local press: “My first experience of Aberdeen was through golf where I’ve been fortunate to play some of the region’s fabulous courses. I didn’t know much about AFC but Dave (Cormack) and Bobby made a very compelling case for the club’s vision and plans.

“I’m passionate about the positive impact football can have on young people and the wider community.

“There’s a wonderful conglomeration of people at AFC and the trust and, after having viewed the Aurora campaign video, I’m even more excited about being involved.

“I cannot imagine this type of facility, which will reach into all parts of society, being turned down.”

This investment follows the club’s announcement it has secured over 60 per cent of the funding required for the first phase of its plans for a community sports facility, training academy and stadium.

Mr Cormack said: “I am delighted he has come on board and I will continue to spread the word about our vision in the US.”

Aberdeen FC chairman Stewart Milne added: “Tom’s investment in the club is an endorsement of our vision.”
