Unsolicited donations to Treasury top £4.7m since 2003

A freedom of information request has revealed that 18 individuals have voluntarily donated almost £620,000 to the Treasury this year alone.

Since 2003, over 150 donations totalling £4.7 million have been made, including bequests left in the wills of 27 people.

The money goes towards general public spending, but cannot be earmarked for specific purposes. The highest annual total was in 2020, when donations topped £1.19m, possibly linked to the pandemic, BBC reports.

The second highest year was 2010, when two donations and five bequests left in wills were received for a total of £972,621.71.

In 2014 and 2015, nothing was voluntarily given, and 2005 saw just £5 received.
