Trump’s Balmedie golf course posts eighth consecutive year of losses

Donald Trump’s first Scottish golf course has posted its eighth year of consecutive losses in 2019, despite an 18% rise in revenue.

Trump International Golf Club Scotland Ltd (TIGCS), which owns and operates the golf course, its clubhouse and a small hotel at Balmedie in Aberdeenshire has racked up further loses in 2019 despite an 18% rise in revenue to £3.27 million.

According to new accounts filed with Companies House TIGCS’s losses rose 3% to reach £1.1m. The course has not posted a profit since it was opened in 2012.

The company said green fee rates and membership demand were rising and that it had expanded its events facilities to meet additional demand, however, this was offset by higher payroll and other costs.

The accounts reveal that the golf course employed 84 people at the end of 2019, up from 77 staff in the previous 12 months.
The company blamed its 2020 performance on the coronavirus pandemic, which forced the closure of the course for part of the year and which limited guest numbers due to social distancing rules and curfews.

TIGCS did not publish figures for 2020.

The firm added that it had made ‘significant progress’ on a plan to build a 550 unit residential village including holiday cottages, lodges and additional leisure facilities beside the course.

Despite the weaker 2019 and 2020 performance, TIGCS said it was optimistic about the future for the course. The company said its directors believe the resort’s profitability ‘will be positively impacted in the long term’ as a result of operational adjustments.

The firm’s directors said that “Trump International continues to rise in the world golf rankings and plays an important part in the global Trump portfolio.”
