Temporary Scottish vacancies rise by 8 per cent year-on-year

Demand for temporary professionals in Scotland has risen by 8 per cent year on year to September 2016 according to research from the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo).

The data, provided by recruitment software company, Innovantage, revealed that in addition to the 8 per cent uplift in temporary vacancies, demand for professional contractors rose significantly across a number of sectors including property and technology which experienced uplifts of 28 per cent and 17 per cent respectively.

Diane Turnbull, Membership Relations Manager for Scotland at APSCo, said: “Following a month of positive uplift in August professional job availability increased once again in the temporary market year on year to September. Overall employment has held strong in recent months despite many commentators predicting that demand would dip after the outcome of the EU referendum. There are numerous signs of positivity in the employment landscape, with figures from the Office for National Statistics indicating that employment rose to 74.5 per cent in the three months to July.

“Demand for temporary professionals in the construction sector has risen 28 per cent year on year to September no doubt partially as a result of the increased number of projects underway across Scotland. The sector is also set to receive £200 million worth of ‘construction related investment’ if Heathrow gets the go-ahead for a third runway, as a part of a new deal between the airport and Scottish government. According to Heathrow Airport chief executive John Holland-Kaye an expanded Heathrow would create 16,000 new jobs in Scotland. The tech sector continues to thrive and benefit from foreign investment, with a delegation of Scottish technology companies set to visit Munich later this week to help encourage further foreign investment into the sector.”
