Start-up Label Ventures defies lockdown with record £2m revenue in first year of trading
Edinburgh-based start-up Label Ventures, which connects global brands and businesses to creative and technology teams, has recorded £2 million in revenue in their first year of trading, all whilst in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
Now the business is targeting massive growth in 2021, including rapid international expansion.
The fast-scaling team competes with traditional consulting firms like Accenture and Deloitte but models itself on a music label rather than a holding company.
Their set-up means they scan global markets to sign the hottest creative and technology talent to work with them as Labelmates. The Label then uses their own production studio to set up and lead these distributed teams to create a twin delivery system with a major client organisation.
The teams they can bring together, along with removing the need to own their own vast in-house team as legacy consulting companies do, means Label Ventures can be more effective, significantly more efficient and more ethical for clients.
Label Ventures is already working with some of the largest financial services and tech sector players to put this into practice. For the founding team however the Label’s cause is bigger than forming a new model for professional services.
Nick Sherrard, founder of Label Ventures, said: “Fundamentally we want to be a platform for amazing creative people to do pioneering work. The consulting industry has been telling clients for decades that the industry was about to transform and they had to change fast, but if you take a look around not that much has changed on the consulting side of the fence. I think clients are really ready for a different option. We can be much more effective, more efficient and more ethical in the way we behave.”
In recent months, the team has been building out both its leadership team and its roster of signed agencies and tech companies signed to the Label.
Paul Bowman has joined to create the A&R function having been a partner in innovation consulting firm Market Gravity in North America, whilst Maxine Mackie has joined from Deloitte Digital to lead the production Studio.
Seasoned CFO, Neil Barnett has joined as Finance Director with the goal of building out a broader suite of artist management style services for the independent studios signed to Label Ventures.
Charlie Smith joined at the start of year as consulting partner having been Managing Director of International Development, Strategy and Technology at Scottish Enterprise.
Mr Sherrard added: “Growth for us is about proving we can build a major creative force in the world that is built around the makers, not the middle managers. Our Labelmates and our clients are already drawn from all over the world, but we want to put in a Label team on the ground in some key markets to further support them. While there are material things we need to make happen to achieve that part of our growth story, the core of our purpose is still to prove that if you want to make a change happen ask a pioneer.”
