Scottish businessman Crawford Gillies named next chair of Barclays Bank UK
Scottish businessman Crawford Gillies has been named as the next chair of Barclays Bank UK PLC, succeeding Sir Ian Cheshire.
Barclays Group said Sir Ian is stepping down “with regret” because he is “unable to accommodate the increased time commitment and duration” required to see through its post-pandemic plans. He will remain on the board until the AGM in May 2021.
Mr Gillies will join the board with effect from 1 January 2021. Barclays said his “track record and deeply knowledge of the Group, including Barclays UK, position him well for the role”.
Upon his appointment to the Barclays UK board, Mr Gillies will cease to be the senior independent director of Barclays Group and will be succeeded in that role by Brian Gilvary. He will continue to chair Barclays’ remuneration committee until 1 March 2021 before handing over to Mr Gilvary.
