Scotland’s professional sector contracting job availability up 3 per cent year-on-year
Demand for professional contractors in Scotland increased by 3 per cent in the 12 months to December 2015, a substantial difference to the UK average of -4 per cent, according to the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo).
The data, provided by recruitment software company, Innovantage, revealed that growth in the region varied between sectors, with accounting and finance, for example, recording a 21 per cent rise in vacancies and marketing positions increasing by 27 per cent.
Diane Turnbull, APSCo membership relations manager for Scotland, said: “This month Scotland has bucked the trend set by the rest of the UK by being the only region to see its professional sector grow overall. A huge rise in the ‘gig economy’ has provoked an increase in contract roles as professionals look to take control over the flexibility of their careers, but this is one factor which has negatively impacted the hiring activity of the professional sectors in many regions.”
“Recent news that tech giant, Skyscanner, has sourced £128 million in order to launch its platform worldwide has provoked rumours of impending vacancies within the sector as the organisation works to realise its international potential. Promisingly, there was also a 20 per cent jump in HR roles, which suggests firms are hiring more people generally as they seek to bolster human resources teams. So it looks as though 2016 is set to be an exciting year for Scotland – we look forward to seeing what it has to bring.”
