Scotland’s economy grew by 0.2% during the fourth quarter of 2019, according to statistics announced today by the chief statistician covering the period from October to December.

Growth in the latest quarter has not been revised from the first estimate published on 18 March. Annual growth for 2019 is now reported as 0.7% compared to 2018, revised down from the first estimate of 0.8%.

During the fourth quarter, the updated figures show that output in the services sector grew by 0.5%, output in the production sector fell by 1.4%, and output in the construction sector grew by 0.3% compared to quarter 3.

The GDP Quarterly National Accounts publication includes the second estimate of growth for the October to December period. This uses data which has been released since the first estimate was published.

The Quarterly National Accounts also includes a range of other statistics which are used for economic analysis, forecasting and modelling.

Responding to the publication, Fiona Hyslop, economy secretary, said: “These figures obviously predate the current coronavirus pandemic, and we are very much aware that the latest State of the Economy report, published by the Chief Economist last week, presents analysis showing the very serious challenges posed to Scotland’s economy by the lockdown measures currently in place.

“That is why we have set up an independent advisory group to provide expert economic advice, which will be crucial to help us deal with the challenge of rebuilding our economy.

“The Scottish Government is working extremely hard with all our partners to protect Scotland’s economy as much as possible during these unprecedented challenges.”

She added: “We have offered a package of support worth £2.3 billion which includes 1.6% rates relief for all non-domestic properties in 2020-21 and 100% relief for properties in retail, hospitality, leisure and airports. A £100 million package of support for small businesses and newly self-employed people will be open to applications by the end of the month.

“In addition, we have extended the £10,000 Small Business Grant and the £25,000 Retail, Hospitality and Leisure (RHL) Grant Scheme in response to feedback from business.”
