Restructuring expert Paul Dounis joins Opus in Scotland

Opus Restructuring & Insolvency has bolstered its Scottish operations by appointing experienced insolvency practitioner Paul Dounis as a partner in its Edinburgh office.
Mr Dounis joins Opus from RSM and brings over 35 years’ experience, having worked in major financial centres including Australia, London, and Scotland. A highly regarded insolvency practitioner, Mr Dounis specialises in advisory and restructuring, helping businesses navigate financial challenges and secure sustainable futures.
Mr Dounis said: “I am delighted to be joining Opus at such a pivotal time for the Scottish market. With significant economic shifts and new legislation coming into effect, businesses need expert guidance to adapt and thrive. I look forward to working with the team to support our clients through restructuring and financial challenges.”
This expansion comes at a crucial time, with the introduction of the Movable Transactions Act in Scotland. The legislation enables fixed charges on certain types of assets, making it easier for lenders to structure deals and encouraging increased investment north of the border. Additionally, changes in Scottish landlord regulations with the removal of the rent freeze cap introduced during the pandemic are likely to affect a number of sectors, such as retail, hospitality, and construction, where businesses are facing rising raw material costs.
Mark Harper, partner at Opus, commented: “Opus is well-positioned to offer expert guidance in this evolving financial landscape, helping businesses navigate challenges and access early restructuring support.
“With an expanded Scottish team, the firm is committed to steering clients through these legislative changes, ensuring they seize opportunities while mitigating risks.”
Mr Dounis has played a key role in pioneering the development of a formal restructuring plan designed to make these procedures more accessible to businesses of all sizes. The focus there was on streamlining the Court process, including reducing timescales, to support the business’s recovery as a going concern.
Tim Dolder, managing partner at Opus, added: “This represents a significant milestone for our firm and underlines our commitment to the Scottish market.
“Paul’s appointment brings a wealth of experience, and we are confident that his expertise will be invaluable to our clients. With new legislation shaping the business environment, our growing team in Scotland is ready to support companies with proactive financial strategies.”
To further cement its presence in Scotland, Opus will shortly be opening a larger office in central Edinburgh, providing a base for its expanding team and reinforcing its position as a leader in the insolvency and restructuring sector.
