Proposals by Dublin-based Dalata Hotel Group for a £50 million hotel in Edinburgh have moved to the planning stage.

A four-star Clayton hotel consisting of 167 rooms is planned for the site at 28 St Andrew Square.

Dalata Hotel Group, which already has an established Scottish presence, operating both a Clayton hotel and a Maldron hotel in Glasgow, announced plans to expand into Edinburgh with the acquisition of a development property in October.

The group is working towards zero onsite carbon, a key feature of the new hotel which will make it one of the most sustainable hotels in the Scottish capital.

Under the plans, a sympathetic conversion of an office building to a hotel will bring additional benefits to the area, allowing public access to a previously closed Victorian building and activating the street frontages at a prominent corner of St Andrew Square.

If approved, the hotel plans to open in 2026 and create 376 local jobs, 80 of which are jobs in the hotel, and also support around £6.5m contribution to the local economy.
