Holyrood-owned Prestwick Airport has announced the appointment of a new finance director.

Chartered accountant Brian Sutherland will take up the post from December 7 amid an ongoing management shake-up at the hub, which was saved from closure when the Scottish Government bought it for £1 in 2013.

Mr Sutherland, who was born and raised in Ayrshire, joins the airport from international packaging business, Multi Packaging Solutions, where he is currently finance and commercial director.

A Stirling University graduate, he has previously held senior positions at Warburtons, ASDA Stores Ltd and Chivas Glenlivet.

Mr Sutherland will take over from current chief financial officer, Grant McLeod.

Mr Sutherland said: “As an Ayrshire man, I am well aware of the significance of Glasgow Prestwick Airport to the local and national economy. I am delighted to be joining the airport at such an important time and look forward to working with the Prestwick team and wider stakeholders to help develop the airport’s operations.”

In August it was announced that then chief executive Iain Cochrane and chief commercial officer Graeme Sweenie were stepping down as part of an effort to revive the airport’s fortunes with fresh talent under the guidance of chairman Andrew Miller.

Aviation specialist Richard Jenner is now in place as interim chief executive while a permanent replacement is sought.

Mr Miller said: “There has been significant change at the airport in recent months and, although it will take time to see the full benefits come through, I am pleased to say that we are now building a strong team that has the necessary skills and experience to identify and maximise new market opportunities in the future.”
