Morrisons to close 132 McColl’s stores
Morrisons has announced plans to close 132 of McColl’s convenience stores that the supermarket recently acquired.
Some 1,300 staff will be affected but they could be offered jobs elsewhere by the chain.
Among McColl’s Scottish locations, Bridge of Allan, Corstorphine (Edinburgh), Dalgety Bay, Dunfermline, Dalkeith, Fort William, Glenrothes, Hamilton, Helensburgh and Kilwinning have been selected for closure, Daily Business reports.
The £190 million deal to buy McColl’s out of administration was initially proposed in May, however, it only went ahead last month after it was approved by the Competitions and Market Authority (CMA). Morrisons agreed to sell 28 stores to satisfy the CMA’s requirements.
Morrisons has said it plans to convert all remaining McColl’s stores into Morrisons Daily shops. Currently 286 of the remaining 1,164 McColl’s stores operate under the Morrisons Daily brand.
Joseph Sutton, Morrisons convenience, online and wholesale director, said: “We have a great deal of work to do but there’s no question that McColl’s is a business with strong potential.
“I’m confident that the combination of McColl’s conveniently located stores and great colleagues together with Morrisons scale, brand, systems and fresh food expertise will lead to a transformation of the business.
“We very much regret the proposed closure of 132 loss-making stores but it is, very sadly, an important step towards the regeneration of the business.”
