Mark Carney to face new Treasury Select Committee
Bank of England governor Mark Carney will appear before MPs today for the first time since the general election in May.
Members of the Treasury Select Committee, which includes new SNP MP George Kerevan, are expected to question Mr Carney on the outlook for UK financial stability, particularly against the backdrop of crisis in Greece.
Carney will also field questions on the Bank’s Inflation Report, which predicts that inflation will pick up towards the end of the year.
He will be joined by other members of the Bank’s monetary policy committee as well as the financial stability committee.
Committee chair Andrew Tyrie, a Conservative MP, said he will ask questions about the leverage ratio following the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards’ conclusion that the financial policy committee should set the leverage ratio.
The Bank has also launched a consultation requiring the largest UK banks to report their leverage ratio.
Tyrie said: “The leverage ratio is an essential addition to the Bank’s toolkit for improving the stability of the financial system. A good deal of judgement is needed in its implementation and it is crucial that the Bank exercises it.
“The Treasury Committee will be asking questions of the Bank of England about the leverage ratio when they come to see the newly formed Committee on Tuesday.”
