The Scottish travel company Cashel Travel Ltd has reported record profits and been awarded a prestigious Green Tourism Silver Award after bouncing back strongly from the pandemic.

The family-owned destination management firm, headquartered in Leith, saw turnover increase by 49.39% to £9.45 million in the year to September 2023. Profit after tax soared 267% as the firm benefited from the resumption of travel and its commitment to sustainable practices.

Cashel Travel, led by James Aitken, the former chair of UKinbound tourism body, cleared all long-term debt including early repayment of government Covid loans. It also grew its workforce from 26 to 32, becoming an accredited Living Wage employer and paying bonuses to staff.

The company, with global offices including Edinburgh, London and Manchester, arranged travel for groups from 24 countries in 2023 using its multilingual team of 13 languages. Its new Green Tourism award recognises efforts to operate more sustainably.

Mr Aitken said: “We are incredibly proud of the outstanding results achieved in fiscal year 2023.

“This remarkable recovery, coupled with our recent green accolade and ongoing commitment to our employees and responsible business practices, is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our team, as well as the continued trust and support of our valued partners and clients.”
