Last minute reserves take Standard Life crown at Scott-Moncrieff charity tournament
Emulating the great shock pulled off by the triumphant Danish European Championship side of 25 years ago, a team of reserves last week stole the show in similar fashion by winning Scott-Moncrieff’s annual Super Sevens charity football tournament, having only been drafted in at the eleventh hour.
Just as organisers of the 1992 tournament had to call on a Denmark squad containing the likes of Peter Schmeichel and Brian and Michael Laudrup to fill the place left when Yugoslavia tragically descended into civil war, last Friday organisers from accountancy firm Scott-Moncrieff had to scramble to recruit a seven-strong squad made up of reserves from the other teams after a last-minute cancellation threatened to disrupt the entire competition.
And, just as with that great Danish side, the cobbled together reserve team, which was made up of players from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh Airport, Waverley Sports Club and Scott-Moncrieff, ended up pulling off their own unlikely victory after beating Sweco UK 2-0 in an exciting final, taking the cup from last year’s winner, Standard Life.
The tournament took place at Spartans Community Football Academy in Edinburgh, and raised over £2,000 for Bethany Christian Trust; a charity that supports individuals across Scotland who are at risk of homelessness, and helps to alleviate the suffering of those who are already homeless.
This is the third year that Scott-Moncrieff has hosted the Super Sevens tournament, which has raised almost £3,300 for their previous nominated charities, Children’s Hospice Association of Scotland (CHAS) and Spartans Community Football Academy.
Taking on the two Scott-Moncrieff teams this year were 12 of Scotland’s leading companies; Morton Fraser, Brewin Dolphin, FNZ, Royal Bank of Canada, Standard Life Aberdeen, Sweco UK, Moody’s Analytics, Royal London, Investec, Hymans Robertson, Clyde & Co and Cathcart Associates.
Partner and head of CSR at Scott-Moncrieff, Wemyss Stewart, said: “Bethany Christian Trust carries out excellent work in the communities in which we, our partners and our clients operate. We are proud to support such an important charity, which tackles one of the biggest problems we face in Scotland.
“We’re also delighted to see our audit trainees and students take it upon themselves to organise such a successful event which brought together a number of well-respected organisations for some informal networking and fun while raising money for such a great cause
