Kettle Produce records £1.89m pre-tax loss on £161.69m turnover
Kettle Produce, a vegetable producer headquartered near Cupar, has disclosed a pre-tax loss of £1.89 million for the year ended 27 May 2023.
This is a different of around £80,000 compared to the previous year’s £1.81m loss, according to the latest filing at Companies House.
The company’s financial director, Liz Waugh, attributed the mixed fortunes to atypical sales during the first quarter, driven by surplus old season crops. Subsequent disruptions caused by substantial rainfall and frost during the key winter trading period from the UK and Europe further impacted the supply chain, resulting in business harm.
Despite a 10% increase in turnover to £161.69m, up from £146.98m in 2022, Kettle Produce couldn’t offset the earlier losses. In response, the board conducted a strategic review and initiated a business restructure to reduce operating costs. The implementation of various project streams aims to ensure the company achieves strong, sustainable profitability.
Ms Waugh acknowledged ongoing challenges related to inflationary pressures, market volatility, the energy crisis, and labour availability. However, she expressed confidence in the steps taken, stating that the restructuring is already showing positive effects.
Kettle Produce operates two sites in Fife, at Balmalcolm Farm, Cupar, and Freuchie, along with one in Barrowcliffes, near Nottingham. Beyond Scotland, the company has a presence in Spain through Kettle Produce Espana SL, a joint venture formed in 2003. Additionally, Kettle has strategic supply partnerships with major growers in England, France, Spain, and Portugal, covering over 6,000 hectares.
