Johnston Carmichael has put forward a united front at this year’s Kiltwalk with 130 staff and partners taking part across all four events and raising £21,688 for 46 charities.

Edinburgh’s event, held on Sunday 18 September, marked the final Kiltwalk of the year, with 67 members of Johnston Carmichael’s staff and partners lacing up their boots and taking some mighty strides around the capital in support of 27 different charities including Alzheimer Scotland, Trussell Trust, and Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity.

Johnston Carmichael has been a gold sponsor of Scotland’s favourite mass participation charity event for the past six years as part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which its 850 staff and partners live and work. The £21,688 total includes the 50 per cent top up from Sir Tom Hunter and the Hunter Foundation.

The business, which was founded in Elgin more than 80 years ago, has 13 offices across the UK.

For many at Johnston Carmichael, the Edinburgh Kiltwalk proved to be extremely emotional, with a number walking to raise funds for Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland in memory of tax partner Peter Young who sadly died from a heart attack last year. Mr Young was integral to the firm, taking a keen interest in the education and upskilling of the next generation of tax professionals as well as being a hands-on proactive tax adviser.

Joining the Johnston Carmichael team was John Todd, a now-retired tax partner from the firm’s Inverness office. He suffered a heart attack in 2021 and retired in 2022 due to ongoing health issues. Mr Todd, who received support from Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland to aid his recovery, completed the wee wander with his colleagues in support of the charity.

Susie Walker, head of tax at Johnston Carmichael, said “I am so proud of all my colleagues that have taken part in this year’s Kiltwalk events – whether they took a wee wander or some mighty strides in their tartan. We smashed our original target of 100 walkers, and then some.

“It has been a privilege to use this year’s event to celebrate two of the firm’s influential Tax Partners. We all had Peter and his family in our hearts and minds as we completed our Edinburgh Kiltwalk. Both Peter and John had an enormous impact on everyone they worked with, both professionally and privately.

“Every year, Kiltwalk provides an excellent opportunity for the Johnston Carmichael team to come together, bond and serve the local communities that we live in. Here’s to 2023!”
