Jail for fraudster who embezzled £130k after faking accounts degree

A man who fabricated a degree in accountancy from St Andrews University in order to secure a £49,000-per-year job from which he embezzled £131,000 has been jailed.

Robert Stewart, 49, was sentenced to 21 months and forced to pay back all of the cash he stole from Cash Generator and The Cheque Centre at Bankhead Crossway North, Edinburgh, between August 22 2011 and October 10 2013.

He was ordered to sell his house at Cairnhill, Airdrie, within 12 months in order to made good the restitution when he appeared from custody at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.



Stewart was caught in October 2013 after his employers received a letter claiming that his qualification was not genuine.

Although he immediately went off sick before taking annual leave and then finally tendered his resignation, his employers dismissed him.

An audit was carried out and it revealed that numerous payments had been made into accounts held by him.

He subsequently pled guilty to embezzling £130,956.42 from the business.
