Independent retailers on the rise in Scotland as new start-ups outstrip rest of UK
Entrepreneurial spirit is on the rise in Scotland with over 130 new independent shops opening up over the last year, compared to 75 in 2015, according to new research by the Local Data Company and British Independent Retailers Association.
Scotland experienced the largest growth in independent retailers compared to anywhere else in the UK over the course of the last year - with 90 new shops opening in Edinburgh and 39 opening in Glasgow.
Cafes, restaurants, bars, hair and beauty salons have accounted for most of the growth. Many have attributed this to changing consumer habits and attitudes towards buying locally as well as the rise in demand for specialised products.
Stuart Mackinnon, external affairs manager for the Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland, welcomed the overall upturn but said improving digital services and changes to business rates needed to be addressed to ensure a healthy sector.
He said: “Independent retailers offer great products and services alongside super customer care that you just don’t get elsewhere. It is fantastic to see the number of Scottish independents on the increase — though there’s much to be done to keep up the momentum.
“We need to see big business and the public sector also show commitment to high streets by putting more staff and services in the centres of our towns.”
