HRMC moves VAT registration changes to online only
HMRC has made significant changes to the process for updating VAT registration details.
Aberdeen-based chartered accountants firm Hall Morrice is advising businesses that, effective from today, any requests to change VAT registration details must be made using the VAT online account.
Emma Crossan, senior manager at Hall Morrice, explained: “Making all VAT registration changes via the online account, replaces the previous methods that included the VAT484 form and other postal or electronic means.
“This transition to a digital process is part of HMRC’s ongoing efforts to streamline services, enhance security, and reduce processing times. Using the online account is expected to provide a more efficient and secure way for businesses to manage their VAT registration details, thereby avoiding unnecessary delays.”
The change will come into effect from Monday 5 August 2024.
Ms Crossan continued: “While this change promotes digital engagement, HMRC recognises that some customers may face challenges in accessing digital services.
“To support these individuals, HMRC will continue to offer assistance through non-digital channels, including phone support and the ‘needs extra support’ service.
“Customers who are digitally excluded or need assistance can still contact HMRC to request a VAT484 form when necessary, such as in cases of notifying HMRC about taking over someone else’s VAT responsibilities.”
Updated guidance on the new process is available on the HMRC website under ‘change your VAT registration details’.
