Gordon and MacPhail toasts £4 million rise in profits
Moray-based whisky specialist Gordon and MacPhail has hailed steady sales and a £4 million rise in profits during a year of “unprecedented trading conditions”.
Ewan Mackintosh, the firm’s managing director, said that the company’s strategy of thinking long term had helped it endure the impacts of COVID-19, US whisky tariffs and Brexit.
The latest results released by the firm’s owners, Speymalt Whisky Distributors, revealed that pre-tax profits rose to £13.9m in the year to the end of February, from £9.8m in the previous 12 months.
At the same time, sales increased by 1% to over £34m. The net assets of the company as of the 28th of February 2021, were £65.6m, compared to £55.4m in 2020.
Speymalt Whisky Distillers said that while trading had been restricted during the pandemic impacted year, the focus on investing for the future of the business has had a wider positive impact on the local supply chain.
After the first lockdown, the business engaged in a review of its trading model, resulting in a small restructure leading to a small number of redundancies.
Ewan Mackintosh said: “Despite obvious challenges in the market, we are pleased to report this year’s financial results, with sales, profit and assets all increasing.
“Our philosophy of thinking longer term has not only provided the stability to navigate the difficulties presented by Covid-19, but also to continue the investment back into the business for future growth.
“We are delighted by progress at The Cairn Distillery and the completion of other major infrastructure projects.”
