Golf professional Jon Wiggett faces jail time for £150k tax avoidance scheme
Jon Wigget, a golf professional who pocketed over £150,000 in VAT, is facing jail time.
Mr Wiggett, who owns Brahan Golf Club located outside Conon Bridge, admitted the offences and was due to be sentenced at Inverness Sheriff Court yesterday.
Sheriff Sara Matheson agreed to a request from his lawyer to postpone the sentencing in order to allow Mr Wiggett to carry out fencing work at his home to safeguard the family property.
The sheriff agreed to postpone dealing with Mr Wiggett until April 14.
At an earlier hearing, the court heard that Mr Wiggett admitted fabricating VAT returns with false invoices and defrauding the Inland Revenue of £154,091, The Press and Journal reports.
Depute fiscal Karen Aitken said the case was highlighted to HMRCs Individual and Small Business Compliance Department due to the high volume of VAT repayments that Mr Wigget had collected.
She said: “HMRC officers contacted Jon Wigget in February 2017 to arrange to visit his premises to inspect his books and records on April 25 2017.”
The documents were reviewed and referred to the Fraud Investigation Service in HMRC.
Mr Wiggett’s golf club premises were searched on October 17th 2017 and a laptop was removed from the property along with various other items.
Investigations later revealed invoices were fraudulently created and an examination of the laptop revealed the invoices were stored there.
