Glasgow surpasses 50,000 business milestone
Glasgow has reached a significant milestone with 51,750 registered businesses, surpassing the 50,000 mark for the first time in its history.
The data comes from Inform Direct, a company secretarial software and formation specialist, in collaboration with statistics from Companies House and the Office for National Statistics.
Leading the way is the Anderston/City ward with 26,432 companies, trailed by Govan and Southside Central, hosting 3,241 and 2,549 businesses respectively. These figures highlight Glasgow’s growing stature as a hub for diverse and thriving sectors. The city is a hotspot for software and digital media, including web development, film, TV, advertising, animation, and games development.
Additional prominent industries encompass low-carbon energy, medical and life sciences, engineering, and technology. Contributing to this positive business environment is the city’s access to a skilled and talented workforce, nurtured by five renowned higher educational institutions recognised for their top-tier research.
John Korchak, managing director at Inform Direct, underscored Glasgow’s remarkable progression. He commented: “Glasgow had an impressive year in 2022 which has continued into 2023, passing the 50,000 milestone for the first time in its history.
“This shows that it offers a very positive environment for business – both in terms of new start-ups and existing companies.”
