Glasgow council finance chief to step down

Glasgow City Council’s executive director of finance, Martin Booth, is to step down at the end of the year.

Mr Booth, who has held the post since May 2018, said it had been “a privilege to work for the city” but wanted to “think about focusing on something new”, according to The Herald.

Prior to his appointment, he spent eight years as director of finance and corporate services at Glasgow Life. Before this, he worked for COSLA, leading on negotiations with the Scottish Government over financial settlements and drafting the Concordat.

He was also managing director of Isoplan and previously worked in management consultancy for IBM and PwC.

He started his career as a trainee accountant with Glasgow District Council and worked for a number of local authorities before being part of the senior management team that opened HMP Kilmarnock.

Council leader Susan Aitken said: “Martin’s contribution to Glasgow and to local government across Scotland has been huge.”

Mr Booth added: “I’m proud to have been able to lead the team through what was a hugely challenging project to finance the settlement of historic equal pay claims, and to have played a part in the successful delivery of big events like the UCI Cycling World Championships.”
