Glasgow businessman facing jail for £725,000 VAT fraud
Scottish businessman Mohammed Ameen Mirza could face jail time after admitting tax evasion.
The fifty-eight year old filed fraudlent declarations for his store in Glasgow’s Gorbals and another in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, in April 2014.
It has been reported that there was a £4 million difference in sales, which meant he did not pay £725,000 of VAT.
He pleaded guilty at Glasgow sheriff court to submitting VAT returns to HMRC between December 2011 and April 2014 which were not an accurate reflection of sales, The Times reports.
Mr Mirza faced charges of possessing and concealing £474,800 of criminal property held in one of the shops, however, a not guilty plea was accepted.
Individuals found guilty of tax evasion face fines and a prison sentence. Mr Mirza will be sentenced at a later date.
