Gillies' profits drop to £2.1m amidst inflation and slow housing market

Gillies of Broughty Ferry, a long-standing home furnishings retailer, has posted a decline in profits for the year ending 31 August 2023.

Despite a slight increase in sales to £24.6 million, the company’s profits fell from £2.9m to £2.1m due to rising costs.

Managing director Ian Philp cited inflation, a sluggish housing market, and the war in Ukraine as contributing factors.

The company has taken steps to mitigate these challenges, investing in solar panels and expanding its warehousing capacity. It also recently closed its Montrose store, citing rising costs. Looking forward, Mr Philp expressed confidence in the company’s ability to navigate the ongoing difficult trading conditions.
