Ex-Aberdeen footballer in £150k HMRC tax case
Former Aberdeen Football Club striker Dean Windass is facing bankruptcy proceedings after HMRC officials brought the case against him claiming he owes more than £150,000.
A specialist judge oversaw a preliminary Bankruptcy Court hearing in London yesterday wich was not attended by Mr Windass, 47, who was instead represented by barrister Sri Carmichael.
The 1990s Pittodrie star’s lawyers argued the one-time Dons luminary was trying to find a solution and another hearing has been scheduled for December.
The Hull-born goal-getter’s career stretched nearly two decades during which he made more than 600 appearances and netted more than 200 times for more than half-a-dozen clubs, including Hull City, Bradford City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Aberdeen.
In 2008, he reached the pinnacle of his career, scoring the winning goal in the Wembley play-off final which saw Hull City promoted to the top flight for the first time in their history.
Windass signed for Aberdeen in December, 1995 for £700,000 and became a cult hero during his three seasons at the club – scoring 23 goals in 78 league appearances.
However, his on-field volatility also landed him in hot water with the football authorities.
In 2012, he spoke openly about his battle with alcohol and depression.
His 22-year-old son Josh, also a striker, plays for Rangers having signed for the Ibrox club in the summer.
