Edrington, the Glasgow-based whisky distiller, comprising prestigious brands including The Macallan and Famous Grouse, has reported a 43% rise in pre-tax profits and exceeding £1 billion in core revenue for the first time, marking a milestone in the company’s financial performance.

This growth for the fiscal year 22/23 was driven by a 25% upturn in income from spirit brands, resulting in a profit of £387.7 million.

Scott McCroskie, chief executive, said: “Our business has delivered another highly successful year, despite a range of external challenges. Revenue from our spirit brands passed £1 billion for the first time and core contribution increased by 25% from last year’s record result.

“This strong trading performance has allowed us to invest industry-leading sums behind our brands, our people and our operations, as well as funding a substantial buyback of shares.

Mr McCroskie added: “The business delivered a strong performance in almost every country where our products are sold, with particularly strong sales in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the UK, Spain, the Dominican Republic and the USA.

“Whilst the economic landscape will continue to be challenging, the trading environment is improving. We have healthy brands, an effective strategy, record levels of investment in the business, great people and strong momentum. I am confident that Edrington is well-positioned to deliver sustainable success in the future.”

Brand highlights included a robust performance by The Macallan, driven by high demand for premium products such as The Macallan James Bond Collection, The Red Collection 77-year-old, and The Macallan M series. The Famous Grouse, Scotland’s favourite whisky, witnessed a solid performance in its core markets, particularly in the UK.

The company’s premium rum, Brugal, exhibited outstanding growth in the Dominican Republic and Spain.

From a corporate standpoint, Edrington further strengthened its international standing by acquiring a 50% stake in Grupo Estévez of Jerez, ensuring a sustainable supply of high-quality Sherry wines for The Macallan’s oak casks. The company also became the majority shareholder in the ultra-premium American Whiskey brand, Wyoming Whiskey.

Edrington also proved its commitment to sustainability by meeting independently-verified carbon reduction targets, aiming for Net Zero by 2045.

This week, Edrington unveiled a new corporate brand identity, underpinned by its heritage, values, and people. Central to the revamped identity is The Bond icon, inspired by the company’s vintage branding and the family crest of its founders, the Robertson family.
