Dundee RBS branch educates customers through innovative fraud event
A Dundee branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland held fraud awareness training for customers yesterday as a part of UK-wide education initiative involving all major banks, building societies and other financial service firms.
It is the first time providers in the UK have joined together to tackle the issue.
The Dundee event, which was the only one involving a Scottish RBS branch, saw bank workers highlight the top five scams personal and business customers in Scotland are falling victim to, including goods not being received, advance fee fraud, spoof payment requests, invoice fraud and holiday scams.
RBS said people across Scotland are worried about their families falling victim to fraudsters, yet 73 per cent admit they have never discussed the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and those around them from financial fraud.
Regional PR manager for RBS in Scotland, Jonathon Rennie, said: “It is key that young people learn how to protect against fraud and are wary of giving away their profile.
“Our money sense programme focuses on young people from 5-22 and helps educate them on the dangers of fraud.”
Figures recently published by Financial Fraud Action UK (FFAUK) revealed the overall scale of financial fraud in 2016 was £768.8 million, an increase on the £755m lost in 2015.
