Dalata Hotel Group opens £40 million hotel in Glasgow
Dalata Hotel Group Plc, the largest hotel group in Ireland, today officially opens the Group’s first hotel in Scotland, creating 80 jobs locally.
The four-star Maldron hotel is located on Renfrew St, in the heart of the city’s shopping, restaurant & theatre district.
The £40 million property features new stylish spacious air-conditioned bedrooms, a bar and restaurant, resident’s gym, and state-of-the-art business facilities. The hotel is also highly tech-enabled with chrome cast in each bedroom, digital check-in and a virtual guest services platform.
The hotel, funded by Aberdeen Standard Investments, was developed by MRP and constructed by McAleer & Rushe. Aligned to Dalata’s Green Tourism programme the hotel has been built to a BREEAM sustainability assessment of ‘Very Good’ standard and has new technologies such as Air Source Heat Pumps and Heat Exchangers to reduce carbon emissions.
Dalata already operates over 45 hotels across the UK and Ireland, but today’s opening of Maldron Hotel Glasgow City is its first in Scotland. In 2022 the Group will strengthen its presence in Glasgow with the opening of a 4-star Clayton Hotel on Customs Quay.
Hazel Galloway, general manager of Maldron Hotel Glasgow City, commented: “It is a momentous occasion today and I am extremely proud to open this hotel in my home city after what has been a challenging year for everyone in hospitality. I believe we have assembled among the very best in the business for our 80-strong team and we worked extremely hard to ensure the finest of welcomes to our guests arriving today.”
A range of tourism and business organisations including VisitScotland, Glasgow Life and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce also celebrated the opening of Maldron Hotel Glasgow City today.
Welcoming the new arrival to Glasgow, Jim Clarkson, regional leadership director (West), VisitScotland, commented: “Congratulations to the team at the Maldron Hotel on opening in Glasgow this summer. At a time when we are working hard with partners to restore the city’s tourism industry to growth, this is a welcome addition to Glasgow capacity for attracting new events and leisure business in the months and years ahead.
“Tourism is a force for good, creating economic and social value, and enhancing the wellbeing of everyone who experiences it. This new hotel and its 80-strong workforce represent a fresh boost for the city centre, and a great sign that Glasgow is back in business.”
Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, added: “As we approach COP26 later this year and prepare for the World Cycling Championships in 2023, the Maldron Glasgow City Hotel will complement the city’s portfolio of hospitality businesses ready to cater to both leisure and business guests alike.
“Glasgow was named as the World’s Leading Events and Festivals destination in 2019, and as restrictions are eased and we begin to once again play host, the Maldron Glasgow City Hotel is a welcomed investment which will support the rebuild of our city centre for future events.”
The hotel is located on the site of the former STV headquarters and is perfectly positioned close to the city’s major transport links.
The business-friendly hotel has invested in interactive Clevertouch technology in all meeting facilities, alongside Clickshare wireless connectivity, enabling ease of streaming for virtual meeting integration. Maldron Hotel Glasgow City also holds the ‘We’re Good to Go’ industry standard, demonstrating a commitment to comply with all Covid-19 safety guidelines.
