Crime of finance chief who stole £51,000 exposed after heart attack

The finance manager of a Lanarkshire science firm has been caught stealing more than £50,000 from her employers after her embezzling came to light when she had to go off work following a heart attack.

Hamilton Sheriff Court has heard how Monica Henderson, 56, who worked at laboratory supplies firm Thistle Scientific in Uddingston for 16 years, took the cash before she was forced to take an extended absence due to ill health in 2014.

However, her replacement came in to assume her duties only to find a series of suspicious transactions in the accounts stretching back years.

A subsequent investigation found Henderson had been stealing from the company bank account since March 2010, taking up to £2,000 at a time over four years.

Henderson, of Kirkfieldbank, Lanarkshire, admitted at Hamilton Sheriff Court to embezzling at total of £51,260.15.

Alistair Buttery, defending, said she had sold her house and was repaying the stolen cash.

Sheriff Ray Small deferred sentence until next month.
