Edinburgh-based Capital Credit Union (CCU) is offering football fans an interest free loan to buy their season tickets, in the first scheme of its kind in the UK.

CCU has partnered with Hibs to offer the club’s fans an ethical, interest free loan to help spread the cost of supporting their team.

The new product, which is being launched this week, allows fans to pay for their season ticket in instalments over a period of up to 11 months and only charges a one-off arrangement fee of £30, no matter how many season tickets are purchased through the loan.

Capital Credit Union chief executive, Marlene Shiels, said: “Capital is one of the UK’s most innovative credit unions and this partnership with a top football club is a first. We are very aware of the current economic climate and the impact this can have on supporters’ ability to follow their team. Both Capital and Hibs are integral parts of the local Edinburgh community and we share common values.

“We are therefore delighted to launch this partnership with Hibs and to offer Easter Road regulars access to affordable borrowing for their season tickets. We very much hope other clubs in Scotland will follow suit.”

CCU is already a shirt sponsor for Hibs and has built a strong relationship with the club’s community foundation.

Hibs chief executive, Ben Kensell, added: “We really do appreciate how difficult it is for our supporters in the current financial climate. Thanks to our relationship with club partner  Capital Credit Union, we are able to offer supporters more interest free finance options than before, so they now have greater flexibility to split the cost in these challenging times.”
