BoE talks to Sturgeon about banknote designs
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has met with the Bank of England to discuss their banknote designs.
The Bank of England has said its new banknotes will strive to be symbols of the whole UK.
Its new notes will feature images from all four nations of the UK, starting with the new £5 note to be introduced next year, following talks with leaders of the devolved administrations.
The Bank reportedly discussed the plans in a meeting with Sturgeon as well as Welsh FM Carwyn Jones and Northern Ireland’s First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness.
According to a BBC report, the Bank of England says it “repeatedly heard” from the public that banknotes were considered symbols of the UK.
Imagery from the Royal Coat of Arms and the Royal Badge of Wales will be used to reflect this on notes entering circulation from 2016 onwards.
A new £20 note is due to enter circulation in 2020.
