Auditor General recounts how she went from London estate to top public finance job
Scotland’s Auditor General Caroline Gardner has spoken to the Sunday Herald about her journey from a west London council estate to a top role overseeing the accounts of over 200 public organisations.
Ms Gardner, 54, came to Scotland in 1995 as director of health and social work studies at the Accounts Commission, a role she held for five years until devolution.
She was then promoted to deputy Auditor General, a position she held for ten years before being moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands after Britain intervened in a financial scandal in the devolved government.
Her eventual appointment as Auditor General for Scotland happened in 2012 after a year freelancing in Scotland.
Ms Gardner’s full interview can be found on the Sunday Herald website.
