And finally… winning wings
The Philippine 1000 Piso banknote, showcasing the endangered Philippine eagle and a holographic depiction of the national flower, the Sampaguita, has been honoured as the “Banknote of the Year” by the International Bank Note Society.
The reverse design remains the same as its predecessor, presenting Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, a map of the country, and a South Sea pearl.
Despite international recognition, the note’s redesign has sparked controversy locally, as descendants of the three World War II heroes, who were previously depicted on the bill, vehemently protested the changes. Due to this, the central bank has decided to keep producing both versions of the banknote.
Northern Ireland’s £50 note and Scotland’s £100 note were the runners-up in the competition. The Northern Ireland bill displays flora, fauna, and workers, while the Scottish note pays tribute to Sir Walter Scott and Dr Flora Murray.
