And finally… too big for your boots
A tribunal has ruled that a group of employees are due nearly CA$500,000 (£308,000) in wages after their employer paid out 50% of their salaries with company gift cards.
The Canadian Employment Standards Tribunal (EST) dismissed an application from the Vancouver-based Dayton Boots Company appealing the decision that its employees are due some half a million dollars in wages after compensating them with gift cards for the company’s merchandise.
The firm claimed there was a verbal agreement with employees, who accepted to be paid CA$600 (£370) in salary and $600 in store credit every week. It argued that the $600 in gift cards was in addition to regular wages and was not a substitute, CBC news reports.
The ESTs determination found that Daytona Boots was in breach of several laws, drawing attention to Section 20 requiring compensation be paid in Canadian currency.
