Marking this year’s festive winter season, The Royal Mint has unveiled a new 50p coin featuring classic children’s picture book character The Snowman.

The coin, created in collaboration with Snowman Enterprises Ltd and Penguin Ventures, depicts The Snowman decorating a Christmas tree. Designed by Robin Shaw, the animator behind The Snowman and The Snowdog, the coin is available in colour and various precious metal finishes.

Since The Snowman first appeared on a 50 pence piece in 2018, close to 700,000 coins featuring this beloved character have made their way into collections globally across 75 different countries.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at The Royal Mint, said: “The Snowman collectable 50p has become a Christmas tradition at The Royal Mint, and we are delighted to continue this much-loved story on UK coinage.

“This year marks The Snowman’s seventh appearance on a 50p, and Robin Shaw’s special design expertly captures the magic of Christmas.”

The coin is a collector’s item and will not be in general circulation. Fans will also be able to strike their own Snowman 50p at the Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant, South Wales, from 11 November.

To further celebrate the launch of The Snowman 2024 collectable 50p, The Royal Mint has hidden a solid gold coin behind door 24 in one limited-edition The Snowman advent calendar, offering one customer the chance of striking gold on Christmas Eve.
