And finally… taxing times
A man has been left in disbelief after receiving a tax bill totalling more than $34 billion in overdue taxes, penalties, and interest.
The colossal figure Barry Tangert was quoted by the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue is too large to fit on a single line. Coincidentally, Mr Tangert’s tax preparer spotted an unrelated error in his 2022 return and filed an amended return, leading to a refund from the IRS on the same day he received the overwhelming bill, wjactv.com reports.
Mr Tangert said: “The first thought was, ‘I wish I made enough money to even owe thirty billion in taxes,’”
Continuing his train of thought, he added: “I’m going to need to drink a lot of coffee in order to work three full time jobs’ and then I’m thinking, “Wesley Snipes doesn’t have anything on me,’ and finally I was thinking, ‘don’t they have a computer algorithm to spot an error like this and if a human looked at this why do they still have a job.’”
Upon contacting the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue to rectify the error, Mr Tangert awaits clarification, hoping for resolution in the coming weeks.
