And finally… reversal of fortune

And finally... reversal of fortune

The City of Richmond took a local businessman to court over unpaid taxes, only to discover they actually owed him a refund.

Jeffrey Marks was served a warrant for $658 (around £516) in unpaid business taxes in December 2023. However, Marks had sold his advertising business, Promotional Considerations, three years prior and was unaware of any outstanding balance.

It turned out he had overpaid his taxes in 2020, resulting in a credit that more than covered the alleged debt. Despite this, the city continued to pursue legal action against Marks. It wasn’t until he contacted a local news organisation, who investigated similar complaints against the city, that his case was resolved.

The city has since confirmed they will be issuing Marks a refund and dismissing the lawsuit, CBS 6 reports.

A spokesperson for the city stated that the issue had been “positively resolved with the taxpayer”.
