The president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has ordered several banks in the country to fund an initiative to improve the pedigree of the Alabay dog breed.

He has issued a presidential decree which means that eight banks are required to contribute a 12.5% stake each, according to TDH national news agency.
The Alabay is a home-bred Turkmen variety of the Central Asian shepherd dog.
The president appears to be a devout fan of the breed as he declared 2018 the Year of the Dog in the country and praised the qualities of the animal on national TV.
It has also been reported that earlier in 2018, he also spent his annual leave writing a book about the dog breed.
