The only painting created by London rapper and record producer Skepta has been sold at auction for £81,900, more than £20,000 over its estimated price of £40,000-£60,000.
The piece, called “Mama Goes to Market”, was painted by Skepta over one week in 2020, but was later tagged by graphic artists CHITO and Slawn as well as by DJ Goldie at an event hosted by Givenchy.
Along with other works, the painting was auctioned at Sotheby’s twice-yearly “Contemporary Curated” sale. The buyer is unknown, but Skepta had told the Financial Times that he hoped Jay-Z or Dave Chapelle would buy it.
