And finally... much sad, such loss

Kabosu, the beloved Shiba Inu who inspired the iconic “Doge” meme and became the face of Dogecoin, has passed away at the age of 18 after battling leukaemia and liver disease.

Her owner, Atsuko Sato, shared the news on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the love and support Kabosu received over the years.

Kabosu’s rise to internet fame began in 2010 when a photo of her with a quirky smirk went viral on Reddit and Tumblr. The image, dubbed “Doge”, spawned countless memes featuring colourful Comic Sans text and endearingly broken English phrases, Sky News reports.

In 2013, Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency inspired by the meme, was created. The popularity of both the meme and the currency continued to soar, with a Doge NFT selling for $4 million (worth around £3.15m today) in 2021.
