Clive Palmer, a billionaire mining magnate whose right-wing United Australia Party failed to win a single seat in the 2019 federal election, used Aussies Not Gonna Cop It on the campaign trail.

He initially claimed that he wrote the song, before eventually arguing that it was satire and therefore exempt from copyright rules, RTÉ reports.

However, an Australian judge said the music and lyrics of the two tracks were too similar and rejected Mr Palmer’s arguments in defence.

The magnate was ordered to pay $1.5 million AUD in damages, around €965,000 or £890,000.
