A Scottish DJ is a new entry in The Sunday Times Rich List having amassed an estimated £70 million fortune at the tender age of 31.

Dumfries-born Adam Richard Wiles was stacking supermarket shelves in his home town when he quit in order to turn his hand to music.

It has proven to be a lucrative career switch for the record spinner, now known as Calvin Harris.

He was named in the famous league table ahead of musical legends such as Led Zeppelin and the Bee Gees after amassing his fortune on the back of more than a billion streams on Spotify and his track Summerbeing the number one iTunes download in 40 countries.

Harris, who is reported to earn up to $1 million a set and already the world’s highest paid DJ, is now wealthier than Coldplay star Chris Martin (£52 million), Sir Cliff Richard (£55 million), Kylie Minogue (£55 million) and Take That’s Gary Barlow (£65 million), according to his ranking on the list.

His estimated fortune of £70 million puts him level with Pete Townshend of The Who.

Harris made chart history in 2013 by having nine Top Ten singles from a single studio album. He has had seven UK No 1 singles — more than David Bowie, Rod Stewart or Queen.

Former Beatle Sir Paul, meanwhile, has retained the number one spot. He has a personal fortune of £730 million – £20 million up from last year.

Macca is well ahead of his nearest rival Andrew Lloyd Webber, who is estimated to be worth £650 million, despite not having had a UK number one single in decades.

Sir Paul’s fortune is given a significant boost by his wife Nancy Shevell, who has a £150 million stake in her family’s US trucking business.

Sir Elton John and Sir Mick Jagger are said to be worth £270 million and £225 million respectively.

Also in the chart is Engelbert Humperdinck whose 2012 Eurovision failure has not dented his financial success, with his fortune estimated at £65 million.

The full Rich List, a 128-page guide to the 1,000 richest people in the UK and 250 wealthiest in Ireland, is published on Sunday.
