And finally… charged up
After compelling Tesla’s directors to repay $735 million (around £605m) to the automaker, accusing them of awarding themselves excessively, a legal team is now petitioning for a substantial payday of their own.
They are seeking approval for a staggering $229m (around £188m) in fees, translating to $10,690 (around £8,800) an hour, as per a filing on 8 September in Delaware’s Court of Chancery.
This request, if validated, would rank among the most substantial fee awards from a shareholder lawsuit against a board. The proposed amount would be allocated among four legal firms who dedicated several years to construct a case regarding the compensation Tesla’s directors received between 2017 and 2020.
The legal team estimates the entire settlement value at around $919m (around £756m) and are requesting 25% of this sum as their fee, in addition to approximately $1 million in expenses.
Judge Kathaleen McCormick of the Delaware Court of Chancery has arranged a hearing on 13 October to determine the fate of the settlement and the accompanying legal fee.
