And finally… algorithm and blues
A portrait of Alan Turing by Ai-Da, which is described as the “world’s first ultra-realistic artist robot”, has sold for over £800,000 at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.
The 2.2 metre tall artwork, titled A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing, smashed pre-sale estimates of $120,000-$180,000, fetching $1.08 million (c. £842,000).
Ai-Da, who uses AI to speak, stated the portrait encourages reflection on the “God-like nature of AI” and its ethical implications. The robot artist, designed to resemble a woman, is named after Ada Lovelace, considered the first computer programmer.
Ai-Da’s creator, Aidan Meller, explained that the robot generates ideas through conversations with his studio. The portrait’s style and muted tones were Ai-Da’s own choices, seemingly reflecting the struggles Turing predicted in managing AI.
