And finally... a pretty denarius

A rare Roman coin depicting Brutus, Julius Caesar’s assassin, has been sold at auction in Geneva for €1.98 million (c. £1.64m).

The coin, dating from 43-42 BC, was minted by Brutus and his supporters following Caesar’s assassination in 44 BC.

The coin features Brutus’ profile surrounded by a laurel wreath, symbolising his imperial ambitions, and war symbols commemorating his military victories. It is considered a significant historical artefact, marking the final years of the Roman Republic.

Originally estimated at over €800,000 (c. £664,000), the coin attracted intense bidding from eight online participants before being acquired by a European collector. This sale surpasses its previous appearance at a 2006 Zurich auction, where it fetched 360,000 Swiss francs (c. £318,000).
