And finally… $120,000 snack
An art student recently found Maurizio Cattelan’s iconic banana artwork, “Comedian”, too tempting to resist, as he removed the fruit from the wall of the Leeum Museum of Art and devoured it.
The satirical piece, which sold for $120,000 at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019, is known for its humorous nature and challenges to popular culture.
The South Korean student claimed he ate the banana because he was hungry. After eating it, he taped the peel back onto the wall before the museum replaced it with a fresh one. Cattelan, who was informed of the incident, offered no reaction, CNN reports.
This isn’t the first time someone has found the artwork too a-peeling to resist. In 2019, performance artist David Datuna ate a displayed banana at Art Basel Miami, later defending his act as an art performance. Mr Datuna wrote in his instagram post: “I really love this installation. It’s very delicious.”
