The plummeting price of oil may mean it is currently taking a battering, but a new study has revealed that the Granite City is the best city in Scotland to buy a house and work.

Job and recruiting website Glassdoor website has published a list of the UK’s top places to live based on the availability of employment, affordability of housing, employee satisfaction and median salary.

Cambridge came out on top of the list with a median base salary of £35,000 and average home value of £436,932, but Aberdeen was the highest ranking city north of the border in the study.

It found that across the whole of Britain, Aberdeen was ranked 12th thanks to its median base salary of £43,000 and average home value of £222,323, and identified the three most lucrative “hot jobs” in the Granite City as tax manager, site engineer or SAP (systems, applications and products) consultant.

It was one of only three Scottish areas to make the shortlist.

Glasgow came in at 15th in the list with a median base salary of £26,500 and average home value of £168,797 and top jobs listed as research assistant, sales representative or security officer.

And Edinburgh took the 16th spot with a median base salary of £30,000, average home value of £259,860 and most attractive careers named as business analyst, sales representative or recruitment consultant.

London did not make the top 20 due to the high cost of living there and the competitive job market.

“These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live,” said Glassdoor chief economist Dr Andrew Chamberlain.
